2 galleriesRR50 channels Berkley Marathon. I think a lot of the runners were surprised at this very steep descent into a small creek crossing. Nobody outright fell (that I witnessed), though there were certainly slips and an abundant amount of caution.

2 galleriesTo crest Haeckel Hill means approx 4 km of uphill hiking, closed spaces filled with bugs, sun and very little breeze. Aid Station 2 is the prize, before crossing over to Sumanik Ridge.

3 galleriesJackson Lake is the half-way point for the full distance runners, and the end of the road for leg one. Normally the approach to this fourth aid station keeps the feet dry with a bridge over the creek; this year it was more refreshing.

3 galleriesThe top runner this year completed the 50-mile course in a record 8:30:04 hours; other finishing times ranged out to 15+ hours. The late afternoon saw temperatures peak at 30 C, followed by lightning and thunder, and a few showers to cool the environment.
